Along with his wife Stacey (a specialist pastry chef) Jan opened their restaurant in November 2015, to a small gathering of family, friends, and press – the selection of canapés was a clue of what was to come and clearly by the time we reviewed – six months later – Jan has raised the bar yet again.
So to the service, Geza is front of house – a larger than life character, and what he doesn’t know about the menu, wine list, and selection of spirits isn’t worth knowing. He is a great asset to the restaurant in every sense of the word!
The presentation is bright, artistic, and completely endorses Jan’s philosophy of: ‘Nature provides the product and inspires us to cook and present in a way nature intended.’
Each dish meticulously garnished, delicately flavoured, textures and flavours complementary in their contrast.
This is a treat! And yet oh so simple – hand dived scallop – creamy and one to savour, citrus cured halibut – meaty and flavoursome, shoulder and rump of lamb – actually some of the best lamb that Enjoy has every eaten – sublime.
There’s local fruit, and a choice of cheeseboard too at
a – wait for it – extra investment of just £1.50 a slice and as for the value here at Roots, it’s exceptional – seven courses for under £40. There’re few restaurants that can boast quality, standards, and value in equal proportions and perhaps that’s why Roots is continually number one in Bournemouth and Dorset on Trip Advisor? It will be the Michelin guide next and then who knows?
Jan is one to watch and let’s make sure we keep him, and Roots, in Bournemouth – this is a real gem of a restaurant and a must for foodies from all over the country. 01202 430005
