Launched in 2008, the festival has quickly established itself as the Sporting Glastonbury, attracting 30,000 sports enthusiasts and festival goers.
Bournemouth 7s 2016, saw big performances on both the pitch and the stage in what is being praised as the most successful festival in its nine-year history.
With the sun shining over the three-day event, attendees took advantage of new additions including the iPro Sport Zone, the Hooch Arena and the Bulmers Summer Arena, and enjoyed a live set from Jungle legend General Levy on the Cocoloco Stage.
The iPro Sport Zone included activities hosted by festival partners AFC Bournemouth and the RAF, and catered for visitors of all ages as part of the new Sunday Family Day. Face painting, inflatables, and skill challenges were all a hit with the younger audience.
“We’re so pleased with the reaction to the new Sunday Family Day. It was great to see so many kids enjoying the sport as well as the activities put on for them.
The mixture of teams, families, and sporting heroes is something unique to our festival.” Says 7s CEO Roger Woodall.
Rugby legends Lewis Moody and Shane Williams were amongst those in attendance in the San Miguel V.VIP arena, an area that boasted an exclusive pitch-side garden with outstanding views of the sporting action on the Viper 10 National Pitch.
The final games of the 1,500 on show, were played on the closing Sunday, the result of a staggering 400 teams competing in rugby, netball, hockey, and dodgeball over the bank holiday weekend.
Revellers were then treated to an energetic set from hype-man Fatman Scoop on the closing night of the Sports & Music Festival; a performance that had the Tuborg Beer Tent rocking.
The festival welcomed several big-name brands to the site in Chapel Gate, offering a variety of arenas, products, and services for the festival crowds – something that complements the new and ongoing relationships with more local businesses, claims Roger.
“We take pride in the fact that we can attract huge international brands as well as working alongside local businesses and community partners in and around Bournemouth, putting the area on the map by delivering the best event we can.”
The Bournemouth 7s team says that the success of this year is encouraging ahead of the landmark 10th event
in 2017. The festival has continued to grow since its inaugural outing in 2008, accommodating 30,000 people over the 2016 event.
Roger Woodall welcomes the challenge of improving on this year’s event for the milestone 2017 festival.
“We can’t wait to celebrate our 10th festival with our loyal sports teams and local supporters. We have some exciting ideas about how to mark the occasion and will be working hard to ensure 2017 exceeds expectations.”
