UNRIVALLED VIEWS OVER STUDLAND BEACH,
OLD HARRY AND THE PURBECKS
The Haven Hotel has, one could argue, the most impressive location on the south coast – set at the mouth of Poole Harbour with unrivalled views over Studland beach, Old Harry and the Purbecks – overlooking the Sandbanks chain ferry in its metronomic passage over the harbour entrance.
The Point is the hotel’s impressive fine dining restaurant, with all of the above and more – the views, a menu that is concise, interesting and has options at lunch and dinner that please everyone.
The bar at the restaurant reception has south-west
views of Brownsea Island as well and makes for a good starting point to peruse the menu and enjoy aperitifs, and a bottle of Vouvray Sec ‘Renaissance’ Sébastien Brunet 2014 from the Loire Valley. It also appears on the Coravin Experience wine list of fine and rare wines by the glass, which enables a glass to be enjoyed without having
to buy the bottle – however, we on this occasion were thirsty!
There is a two and three-course prix fixe menu with a choice of three starters, mains and desserts and an à la carte ‘Chef’s Specials’, again with a choice of three per course – but a little more elaborate.
The service is efficient in the bustling split-level restaurant and the view captivating. A choice of seeded white or granary rolls with granite plattered butter, as candles burn in the summer’s fading evening light.
The chicken liver mousse silky smooth with crispy bitter frisée lettuce and poached kumquats – what a great combination!
The pea and mint soup was startlingly fresh with an earthy tone of the white truffle oil.
The fillet of guilthead bream was lovely! The skin lightly crisped, the asparagus piquant and fluffy new potatoes.
They say save the best until last and we did – unknowingly!
The blackberry delice, crème Chantilly and a brandy snap – beautifully constructed – quickly deconstructed by more than one spoon, smooth, fruity and a snappy snap – just great!
The menus start at around £28 for two courses and there are other options at lunch for lighter and more varied bites.
If you are planning a meal out – make sure you see The Point...
