SOUTH DEEP
We promise this will be the last time we review South Deep and make any reference to it being Dorset’s best-kept secret – because it simply isn’t any more.
This hugely popular harbourside restaurant is now part of the fine dining scene in Dorset and draws diners from all over the region for its infamous breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
Let’s describe the location – you can’t get any closer to the water without being in it – there’s an outside area to dine, drink and watch the sun set over the harbour.
The restaurant itself is like a skiing chalet, and in the winter takes on that guise with a roaring log burner, wood-clad walls and fine red wines.
In the summer the sliding doors are opened, the outside terrace is bustling and it is best to book – as everyone wants a little bit of South Deep sunshine.
The menu is interesting with many influences and the Belgium owner/chef Steph has a varied palate – you can enjoy exotic meats, salads and soups at lunch, platters
of eggs and Bloody Mary shots for breakfast and for dinner a wide selection of specials and a hearty à la carte;
meatballs, fresh fish, tarts, minute steaks and risottos. The wine list is elaborate as it is a passion of Steph’s – and in fact ours!
The service is great – funky waiters and waitresses in the South Deep T’s, jeans and trainers. It’s high energy and high quality. During the summer many of the boat owners frequent the restaurant – a day on the water then a few sundowners and charcuterie boards to share with fresh bread and fresh air.
Children and dogs play on the lawn, diners enjoy all-day dining and we enjoy one of the best restaurants in the area for many, many reasons.
