Working in 47 countries worldwide and reaching over 20 million people in 2017, international humanitarian agency Action Against Hunger has worked in close partnership with the hospitality industry for more than 20 years to help fight the causes and effects of global hunger.
Last year, the organisation’s annual Love Food Give Food campaign, which involves over 400 restaurants around the UK adding a £1 donation onto their customers’ bills during September and October, raised nearly £600,000. As part of UK Aid Match, all funds raised were doubled by the UK government. These funds will support an innovative nutrition programme in Senegal aimed at helping young mothers and their children.
In April 2018, James Fowler, owner of the Larder House restaurant in Bournemouth, joined a team of 16 other chefs and restaurateurs from Bristol, Manchester and Liverpool to undertake a challenging trek in Nepal. As well as raising funds for Action Against Hunger, totalling close to £100,000, the trekkers also had a chance to visit the charity’s programmes in the country, which was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2015.
Over five days, the trekkers reached a height of 4,400 metres, passing through the Langtang Valley where
there was still evidence of the extensive damage and loss of life caused by the earthquake. The group saw how Action Against Hunger’s emergency projects helped local
communities, both in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and in the years following.
There is a very busy calendar of fundraising events each year, including in 2018, Too Many Critics in Bristol on
the 24th June, and in London on the 8th July, as well as Auction Against Hunger at Borough Market in London on the 22nd July.
Enjoy the South has also worked closely with the charity with FJB Hotels’ Ocean Palace, Poole Audi and Poole Pirates with Ken Hom OBE.
